Leaving a career you’ve dedicated years to can feel like a profound loss, almost like grieving. When I decided to walk away from my successful corporate career—a career I had meticulously built over two decades—I was overwhelmed by a whirlwind of emotions. This transition was not just about changing jobs but about letting go of an identity I had cultivated for years.
Although the feelings of sadness, guilt, and uncertainty were intense, I discovered a new purpose and fulfillment through this journey.
Here’s how I coped with the “grief” and found a new sense of purpose:
- Acknowledge Your Feelings: Feeling sad, angry, or even guilty is normal. Acknowledge these emotions and allow yourself to feel them.
- Reflect on Your Journey: Take time to reflect on your achievements and the skills you gained. This can help you appreciate your journey and how it has prepared you for new opportunities.
- Find a Support System: Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, or a community of like-minded individuals who understand your journey. (Hint: Femme Forward Community!)
- Focus on Your Vision: Remind yourself why you decided to make this change. Keeping your new goals and vision in focus can provide motivation and hope.
- Seek Professional Help if Needed: Sometimes, talking to a counselor or coach can help you process your feelings and navigate this transition.
